GTK2 revival

Hey Hyperbola community!

Some of you may have heard that GTK2 is being revived. Since Hyperbola already prefers GTK2 software, I thought this might be interesting here.

The repo is currently hosted on Devuan's Git server:

The goal of gtk2-ng is simple: keep GTK2 alive, modernize the code where needed, fix compiler and deprecation warnings, and make sure it keeps building and working on modern systems.

The important part is that we do not want to break ABI. If a program built for vanilla GTK2 does not run properly with gtk2-ng, we consider that a bug in gtk2-ng.

There are also bigger plans around this. We want to revive GTK2-based versions of desktop environments like LXDE, GNOME 2 and XFCE, and also fork / maintain GTK2 versions of programs that moved away from GTK2, such as GIMP, Inkscape, AbiWord, Gnumeric, and others.

Another idea is to bring GtkMozEmbed back for Pale Moon's engine. That could make it possible to revive Galeon as a real GTK2 browser again.

This is still early work, but testing, feedback, ideas and patches would be very welcome.

In case this helps with packaging for Hyperbola, someone already added gtk2-ng to the AUR:

They seem to have applied a patch that was already merged on our side, though.

OpenBSD removed their implementation of the GDBStub citing that it was broken for years as a reason. but as a counter-example: NetBSD has KGDB working on amd64(x86_64). Therefore i propose importing the implementation from NetBSD and fixing all bugs to make it a reliable facility for kernel debugging over serial again

this thread is meant as collection of ideas for HyperbolaBSD and its further development. Before going further some notes and basic rulesets:

- Please only real possible ideas, not a wishing-concerto adding something complete impossible. To find the sensible line between possible or not: Something surely in BSD already implemented or nearing possible throughout code.
- Please no commentary only, except this is a clear relation to an idea brought into or some question. So you can at best point to the concrete posting with a link when you comment on it or ask a question.

time64 is a global intitiative to force the use of 64 bit time on 32 bit systems to mitigate against the upcoming year 2038 bug(any year bug occurs from unsigned(positive only) numbers underflowing to their minimum value after adding 1 to their maximum value because in binary 1 + 1 = 0 with carry and there is no place to store the carry. this causes the time variable to loop back to 0 which represents january 1st 1970 per unix tradition in almost any system)

to prevent this bug from occuring we must identify and change all time related variables in all programs to a 64 bit unsigned number (uint64_t) explicitly instead of using the regular unsigned int type(it could also be disguised as time_t) in C before 2038

LibrePKG = Librecat + makepkg

LibrePKG is a packaging framework and build system with the goal to provide some convinences of the gentoo package manager and developer ecosystem like reducing repititon during new package creation and parallel, sandboxed, chrooted builds while staying true to the goals of hyperbola and being fully compatible with hyperbolabsd

These goals are too ambitious so for now i will be happy if this thing reliably builds a qemu image of hyperbolabsd from source on gnu/linux or creates a hyperbola gnu/linux chroot from source with combination of LFS bootstrapping and hyperbola pkgbuild instrucitons

EDIT 1: low footprint is also a primary goal so dont worry i will try my best to not make this a cpu hog and ram eater like portage

We have three volunteer group openings available to help with HyperbolaBSD development.

Volunteers to help study the original code files and create a description of the algorithms used in those files.
