Not that this is as relevant now, but your supposed to use /etc/hosts anyways for this purpose.

The latter only works with systemd I think.

I haven't had any problems with setting a hostname in /etc/hostname.

setting up hostname in /etc/hostname is primarily toward systemd

openrc user should set hostname in /etc/conf.d/hostname instead

how dangerous is it ?
- it mess up your network, especially network manager
- it mess up your X11 and block your apps, "error cannot open display 0" if you trying an network connection
