The default fontconfig is a bit screwed. Liberation fonts are, for example, intended as metrically compatible free replacement for common proprietary fonts; but it does not show up anywhere in the default configuration.

What do you mean by "bit screwed"? Is it to be fixed here within Hyperbola as system?

Where are these symbols from? What if I need other characters that h doesn't have?

If you use a text editor with the Unifont font, you could copy the icons easily intto your config file. Install l3afpad with pacman, set the font to Unifont in the settings.
