Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Both were added and now part of the repositories. Nevertheless we are coming now in the next phase after release 0.4 and going towards 0.4.1. You can always look into the git-history about updates and added packages:

https://git.hyperbola.info:50100/~team/ … y-way-v0.4
https://git.hyperbola.info:50100/~team/ … y-way-v0.4

We have also removed now Mastodon as being no longer part for the community from now on. The reasoning is well known and easy: We are a small team and have no time to focus onto unneeded debates and discussions. If people have interest within this project, they are always invited to come here. But we won't carry water-buckets everywhere. The tryout had too much time and nevertheless we don't want to support endless anti-social discussions without being kind and friendly. The account on the linked instance of Mastodon will be left but not deleted for backup-reasons to look onto. Nevertheless it is no longer part of our communication and it is therefore no longer any kind of official place for announcements! And no: There will be no revive for this. We have for sure other more important things to do and this includes the upcoming version 0.4.1 and of course HyperbolaBSD, but no time-consume on those platforms. And we also have no need for so-called communication-strategies as we can for sure make nice graphics and messages, but we prefer also first fill everything with useful and stable software and not illusions or empty promises. wink

Consider being small and stable instead of big and without any profile or values at all.

We have recognized that there is not that much interest into Hyperbola and especially HyperbolaBSD. So we will do what we do with all the community and everyone is for sure invited. Nevertheless: Official end of water-buckets carried after people.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Quick note btw, was going to ask about a package being added...

Not for  the GNU VERSION!

Just to be clear...

wink

I don't really need it for that, its actually pretty darn easy to get already...

Also, its more improtant HyperbolaBSD gets into a stable place, then anything else in Hyperbola at this time.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Which package concrete? You have not mentioned the name for any project. smile
And please remember: This is not wishlisting here. It is the roadmap for Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre after version 0.4 released, nothing more, nothing less. You are always invited to create own packages and post them here in the forums. It is better for all of us: Getting a wider testing adhoc, more feedback about missing parts and more. Waiting for the minority to add it? Well, that's also possible. But as mentioned not the best.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We are also going to review some earlier added packages within 0.4 again: The reasoning behind is the growing list of dependencies for some applications especially. Remember therefore: It is not just the point about enhancements. The more dependencies and libraries needed the more security-problems can and will occur. All of them are vectors for possible problems besides that is the main reasoning so-called "modern applications" have so many problems. Better to have it like the known ways: Do just one thing, but do it good!

Applications telling about being "swiss knife" for everything should not and will not be part of Hyperbola.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We are going to remove dino from our repositories as it is not following the idea of lightweight and simple applications. In special dino includes mandatory dependencies for gspell and webrtc within the newer release 0.3.

Gnuplot would be a nice addition, base Emacs' calc requires it to make graphs.

There's a PKGBUILD on parabola I think with the "nox/headless" variant. That variant can be slighty tweaked to work under X with basic support and very few dependencies. Maybe libgd, change the configure flags and that's it (and OFC the sha512sum):

#fooblahblah
depends=('gd' 'readline' 'lua' 'ncurses')
#blablah
--with-x=yes
--with-gd=yes

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/gnuplot-headless

I know Emacs it's a kitchen sink, not so Unixy or Hyperbola-like, but I think about it as an amazing
ELISP environment, able to a lot of stuff by itself.

What I miss on hyperbola it's the GCC8 libjit library, that may be enough to compile an Emacs 28 native build with libjit support, making it much faster on lots of areas and thus having far less locks (GNUS still locks on I/O, but meh).

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

When you miss something and find it being able to be added: Feel free to do and share it afterwards here in the forums. This thread is for sure not a wishlist and just for open communication what will happen now and soon beyond 0.4. For sure there will be some more packages to come, but we won't that much more also. Point about quality before quantity and as dino showed very good that many are not even possible to be integrated without loosing the focus. Hyperbola is community-driven and there can be also alternative repositories besides core and extra being added when people have interest to do that.

Do you know of any alternative to dino that has the omemo encryption format or better?

Just curious, also,  a minimal gui is better than no gui.

I like to have a gui, even if it is a very low tech one.

That's how I roll sometimes.

Btw, just an assumption, but  I assume that webrtc cannot be removed as a dependency, same with gspell?

Well, its a shame, but meh... it is what it is, eh...

Meh...

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

The point is that the project had a clear decision for more mandatory dependencies we here won't and can't provide without violating our ruleset. It is and stays "corporate open-source" as webrtc is clearly in combination with Google. Again also: There is no evil masterplan, but we have here only one concrete group to decide what will happen. So there is no further influence from the "community" for that library. And same for gspell also. It was tried to circumvent that, but: Even if we manage to build one version without the mentioned dependencies those will stay and we will never know what comes next. The application stays therefore a concrete risk having free and libre software without "corporate background" and being lightweight in mind.

You can try pidgin in combination with libpurple-lurch.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Haven't responded sooner till now, my apologies,

It's a shame that dino even forces that insecure dependency in the first place.

Kind of makes me think of something very familiar that caused a certain fork of a well known distro...
One that was named after the founder and his wife...
I wonder what that was called...
Hmmm...

Sarcasm aside,  I thnink I tried that method once, not sure how well it worked, but it doesn't hurt to try again, I suppose.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

I hope we can get the addon as soon as possible: url-rewriter is a nice helper for everyone being interested to rewrite concurrent URLs in daily routine. For example to use invidious instead of youtube or nitter instead of twitter. The addon itself is running smooth and without problems, here is the repository: https://git.hyperbola.info:50100/~team/ … riter.git/

EDIT: And it is there for everyone to download as stable release: https://repo.hyperbola.info:50000/other … -rewriter/
A package will be provided later on also to be installed.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We have upgraded the entries within our wiki for addons: https://wiki.hyperbola.info/doku.php?id … uxp_addons

Furthermore we have decided to wait with the release of version 0.4.1 until all is set and ready. This does not mean there won't be updates for stable: The opposite will be done. We are now testing further additions and some more coming besides an upgrade for GNU/Linux-libre to version 5.10.106. We will therefore transfer all within upcoming weeks from testing to stable, so 0.4 will receive the updates being planned first for 0.4.1 with another ISO-release.

The reasoning for waiting with version 0.4.1 is that we need more time with the next UXP-release and decisions with easier installation-methods. No worries: We will inform all when this is ready and being part within our testing. smile

i dont know if it just me but getting addons from iceweasel menu redirect into blank addons page with following text:

"

browsing with entering url https://wiki.hyperbola.info/doku.php?id … uxp_addons its fine however.

thank you for your hard work master throgh, may i suggest a webpage screenshot for future addons ? i found these xul addons but dont know what to do with them https://addons.basilisk-browser.org/add … creenshot/

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Just to note: We look more and more close towards BSD. So most all new packages should have a possible port at minimum for OpenBSD available. If there is none at all we cannot integrate the package furthermore already for our version 0.4 and beyond. If you want to adapt just for GNU/Linux, you will have to stay at version 0.4.x at a point as we won't support GNU/Linux after the final step towards HyperbolaBSD any longer.

Just to mention that again as we had different questions about adding packages in the last weeks and days, but some of them only available on GNU/Linux. The reasoning is at hand very clear: The more packages and builds focussed only on GNU/Linux, the more effort we would have to port them later on or remove packages being not possible to be ported at all.

To be honest, some packages are not very hard to install anyhow and some are beyond complicated to add to the point where it wouldn't be possible or feasible anyhow, so I do agree, with this thought process.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We will remove the package tblock from our repositories as it is not able to be build in any newer version with our versions in the repositories. And it is also not possible to just "update" those as we won't risk stability for just one package.

The package will later come back, no worries. Being therefore in contact with creator so we can upgrade. But in its concurrent state it was just no fitting.
