Topic: UXP still standing

Since our last discussion about current web browsers insanity I have been taking a closer look at the reactions.
The good news is that even the "open-source" community is worry about the situation (a bit too lake). Most of them making a call to support a thing called LadyBug as a matter of hope. Reading further I was a surprised because in fact this LadyBug is now switching to Swift as programing language (Swift development is still lead by Apple). Anyhow, I was happy to see a couple of comments proposing supporting UXP as community browser, since last versions got much improve. So, yesterday I got the very last version of Basilisk and I was making some tests to see how it performs heavy sites. Let say that I was happy to see that I was able to cover most of my needs (including my bank site) better than before.
Please, do not get me wrong, I am not demanding. But somehow, I pointed to a terrible webBrowser panorama 2 days ago, maybe unnecessarily because we all already knew. And today I saw the remove of IceapeUXP as well. I do not know the situation between Iceweasel-UXP and Basilisk (it is mention in the wiki) but it is nice to know that UXP still moves.

Re: UXP still standing

Hey, thanks for posting. The removal of iceape-uxp is a point of having to much to maintain for us as small team. So the conclusion for this current moment is to keep focus on icedove-uxp and iceweasel-uxp as iceape-uxp itself as a free and libre fork from seamonkey did not and do not get that much attention from within the community and is therefore also too much for us to maintain.

When there is interest nevertheless: All the data is not removed, just not longer provided directly here. So when somebody has interest, just raise hands for getting aboard as active maintainer.

Thanks for clarifying Throgh. I was a surprised by the action of removing the iceape-uxp package, but in fact I dont like such suits. In my case I feel comfortable with just icedove-uxp and iceweasel-uxp.

Re: UXP still standing

We need to clarify that Hyperbola was and is never about "more packages" since 0.4 the strategy was and is to make all parts working for a transition towards HyperbolaBSD. To assure: Yes, iceape-uxp would also run on HyperbolaBSD. But to maintain such amount of applications is another point. So yes, it looks like erratic decision-making to add and remove packages. In fact it is the opposite: We have tried and added packages between 0.4 and 0.4.2 to motivate possible contributors and maintainers, either to be part of the team or take over their package(s) and offer them in own repositories. As there are not that much hands in the air doing so since 0.4.2 we needed to change our approach: Smaller packages, reducing the amount of included packages for sure and also do as much as possible to make the dependency-trees more comfortable for us as small team.

Yes, we were criticized for our decisions surely, also often very harsh and unfair. We accept(ed) this and do not often talk about this here. Some of the critics are nevertheless very clear to read around the forums, but we did the most possible to keep Hyperbola as system working, protect all members of the community and also to be honest towards free software itself. smile
