Topic: The official "Hello world" thread

Post whatever you want here, it can be a "hello world", a test post, spam (not really, I'm just joking), etc. This is mainly for users who do not oftenly use their accounts and wish to keep them, because if you do not post anything in a long time your account is deleted.

seems like a terribly important question, so i reported your post.

i made it very very clear that i would not normally do this, and that theres nothing actually wrong with your question. but since its more than half a year since you asked, and for all we know thats long enough to have your account deleted while asking about exactly that, i thought-- why not? cheers.

I am a newbie and I am sick of having to deal with the anti-spam measure every time I post. When will it end?

Re: The official "Hello world" thread

Alas, printf! I knew him, Hello World, an ELF of infinite formatting, of most excellent echoing. And, GNU willing, mayhap I can figure out how to use forum features, like images, before I go and do it terribly wrong. And as such, I hope I could be so bold as do as such:

Re: The official "Hello world" thread

Hey smile

Well i don't like writing about myself on internet so much these days, but i think this is great place to introduce myself :-). Well my name is Filip, i am polish and i am 25
My gnu/linux background is not so experienced, because 3 years ago before i decided to go linux i used to be avid gamer, played lot's of windows games, used steam, this stuff was all i cared about mostly... So in end of 2017 i have been given new laptop i wanted to use so i can play Diablo 3... It was nice and fun, but i started to realise things like i am poor and nobody and im playing game made by multimillionaire corporation blizzard entertainment and i have nothing in return, and also i thought to myself other people can't benefit from it too... So i thought to myself that playing these steam games etc. is very selfish, so in the meantime i slowly started to become more oriented about data mining and stuff. I have deleted my blizzard account as well as steam... I didnt care so much that i wont be able to play games i paid for... I thought that data about me is more valuable tfor myself than 50 dollars i paid for a game...

So from avid gamer i slowly started to become paranoid about my privacy... I stopped using google... I havent been on youtube for 2 years... This stuff is addicting and i am really fed up of word content that i can see everywhere on corporate websites.
I also realised that if windows 10 consumes so much ram (2GB) then gnu/linux must be better for 'playing games'... Right now on libreboot T500 with Hyperbola lxde installed the ram usage is 170mb after boot.... I find it pretty amazing, because on my old acer laptop with i5 gpu the lowest ram usage on distros like devuan or artix was like 270-350 and it was just plain openbox nothing else!!!

So because i have used proprietary software for nearly my whole life, this libre stuff as well as gnu/linux is something new to me and i feel a bit lost... Few days ago i wrote a post about trying to root android. I have downloaded obarun jwm and even manjaro openbox put it on dvd and this libreboot can't even run these distros ;d. I get some errors ;d.... I find that pretty cool ;D.

Well that's it about my past and how i got into linux journey... I don't use systemd becase i have read so many negative comments about it online and google dns set by default put me off too... From my experience, i have tried many non systemd distributions on my old acer i5 laptop and the battery life was much better than on systemd ones... Let's say on manjaro battery lasted for 1h-hour n half whereas on fresh devuan xfce installation or artix lxqt it was roughly 2,5-3h of watching movies... Also i never had any issues with them.
I have used devuan as my first non systemd distro but i was more keen on trying arch, so i have downloaded Artix and really like pacman... So i prefer it over apt-get...
So months ago when i still had my old acer laptop i have found hyperbola website and thought to myself that this distro is really what i been looking for... I sold my acer laptop cuz it was like windows, i have ordered libreboot from minifree.org (i have waited for like 3 months but i got it now) to install hyperbola on it...
I really love this distro, i feel like i don't want to use anything else, but my knowledge and what i can do on my laptop is very limited, since like i said most of my life i have used proprietary stuff...

I think that if it hadn't been gnu.org telling me about hyperbola i would never know about this distro also it's nice to see that it promotes init freedom campaign smile...

Thank you!!

Re: The official "Hello world" thread

Hey Filip: Welcome to the forum and Hyperbola. And of course besides a warm welcome also the message from myself for help if you need something and I'm able to research for. Regarding Obarun and Manjaro: You should be able to use them. But it is a little bit more compilcated regarding Libreboot itself! I had the same issues back trying to run the first versions of Devuan (as the distribution was in Alpha- and Beta-state). You need to modify the boot-partition as otherwise Libreboot won't be able to find a concurrent point for running the installed operating-system(s) and start loading the initial bootloader.

Re: The official "Hello world" thread

Thank you.

Well i wanted to run obarun/manjaro just to download java stuff to root my android device... But let's face it, i have got pretty secure laptop and OS for it. I can't disable google services on my smartphone cuz i have no access to root. I don't have registered gmail though, i use f-droid for apps and games... However i do update stuff from xiaomi, it doesn't require any registration...

Thanks for help, it's nice to finally stop distro hopping, i wasn't able to run Hyperbola on my old acer laptop, cuz for example wifi drivers were nonfree... But now i am happy with what i have and i am not so addicted to computer like i used to wink.

Thanks and have a nice day wink

Re: The official "Hello world" thread

That brings up another idea as I've already done such things in regard to exchange the wifi-chip in a notebook from Packard-Bell - functional since then with Hyperbola and KDE as desktop-environment. If needed I can provide more information in a seperate thread. Good thought, but also a good point for help!

EDIT: No need for an explanation as the Wiki do a very good job here. cool

Re: The official "Hello world" thread

Hmm, haven't done this here and I think it is just nice for everyone to know each other better: So hello everyone here. My name is Tobias and I live in Germany. I'm around for nine years now using GNU/Linux as main operating-system and more than 20 years from today I had the first tryout for GNU/Linux together with my dad. This was on SUSE Linux 6.0. After a long session with try and error we had the X-server up and running: Grey background and some eyes following the mouse-cursor, nothing more. But hey, who said the start should be easy? smile We had no further clue what to do and therefore left Linux again for the time being. Nevertheless I was fascinated by the idea and had further looks onto different distributions: Corel Linux, Slackware and SUSE Linux with version  10.1.

Windows stayed as main operating-system for me most the time until 2010 as I've had enough from Microsoft, their decisions and the enforced acceptance for me as "customer" not "user" or even "human being" - just some kind of "product". So after another search while GNU/Linux was until then just experimental from time to time and more concentrated on server-environments, I had a look onto Ubuntu and this was my personal breakthrough. And yes I've done also changes for the used distribution: From Ubuntu to elementaryOS, then more into Debian and after this Devuan as I had also enough accepting decisions from some authority above. Getting more into free, libre software with every step taken and after using Trisquel and Parabola I came up here in 2017. And I prefer to stay, doing as much as possible Hyperbola can stay!

So this was my personal story behind using GNU/Linux until today. smile
