Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

As said: The application is now also a service, so we need to reconfigure the buildout for sure. But the maintainer mentioned to downgrade also the requirements as they are not really needed within that new version. So we can get tblock. No final promise at the moment, as I wait for the feedback.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Hello, as we have done now the complete refresh version 0.4.1 is also out. The ruleset is therefore: A complete refresh ends up also in a complete new version. When we do single packages, this won't be the case. Version 0.4.2 will take therefore more advantages from the corrections we done now also. Not much to be seen from the outside, more from the inside. wink

Alrighty, that's fine!

I don't know if you guys still have the sword library package for Hyperbola somewhere on the repo, but yeah, if you have it, I would very much appreciate both that and bibletime being uploaded.

It was in 0.3 at one point and on 0.4 at one point libsword was easy to install and bibletime, I could install from source after that.

If it is too much trouble to put both back on, let me know if libsword would be an issue to return to the repo.

Btw, thanks for the update!

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Sorry, for now that package is not on plan and won't be further as we focus on 0.4.2 for the following:

- Adding security-focus and BSD-ports for concurrent applications like Nitrokey for example
- Solving runit-issues or giving a concurrent way to resolve them
- Fixing hyperinstaller to come so it can be a companion on the installation

Rounding up are for sure updates of existing packages and checking them before the final commit. smile
You are for sure invited to recreate own PKGBUILDs and share them here in the forums - please therefore create for sure a new topic.

Also to note that especially there are differences between Linux- and BSD-ports of the concurrent mentioned packages, so it would take too much time. We would like to use that time for HyperbolaBSD and 0.4.2 to come. Meanwhile some slight updates for different packages come for sure when ready. Also Hyperbola has around a fine base to build own systems and therefore we invite all users to modify the system as they like.

No worries, I might be able to find it somewhere online, if not?

Well, it won't be added for the GNU version and if that is the case,  maybe HyperbolaBSD?

Whenever the beta packages are added to it, which would mean the stable would be added among other important package...

Which, might be a semi long wait, or a very long wait, not sure.

So yeah, fine with me.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We have removed the support for HyperTalking completely for 0.4.1 and releases beyond because out of the following reasons:

- There is no need to have two ISO-releases with exactly the same volume-id (https://forums.hyperbola.info/viewtopic.php?id=623) and the extra-work would make more difference for HyperbolaBSD especially as HyperTalking make usage of many parts where Linux-only frameworks were needed.
- For sure we have migrated the needed parts like brltty, but there was no final test available at that point for a set of pre-installed packages within the ISO.

We concluded that there is not much more interest onto HyperTalking and people can for sure choose their own system right out of all available window-managers and further desktop-environments. Yes, this would mean also problems for disabled people: So we look out for future release bringing back alternatives on a way with just one ISO-file. wink But that is a thought not a final promise: When there is no current way to do so, we cannot do it either way. But for sure we will make sure that everyone can find a way into Hyperbola as project, everyone with a common understanding of our social contract for sure (just to make the wording "everyone" a bit more clear here as we have rules, values and principles and we will make use of it when needed).

So if I had to guess, when HyperbolaBSD is stable, the community will need to contribute to bring it back, assuming there is enough interest, am I right?

Makes sense, given the lack of interest...

To be  clear, we don't need an installation gui for the new OS.

The most I would ever think is of any value, is to have an installer like this:

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VhBoCOl6_eE/ … 600/11.png

Only, with as few dependencies as possible and done in a way that is more OpenBSD like.

Aka, this kind of guided CLI would be more than sufficient imho.

Obviously don't use a debian one ofc...

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

So we look out for future release bringing back alternatives on a way with just one ISO-file.

No need to bring back, what is to be solved elsewhere. And we have a way with hyperinstaller. The point for the community to bring something further would be that we help all making hyperinstaller stable. Was already mentioned!

Curious, but should this thread be closed, since the team is focusing more on the new OS build?

Otherwise, people might keep commenting here about stuff wanted, etc...

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Hey community: Good news for everybody being interested in runit. We have managed to fix it running. And nevertheless we are now onto fixing some further services already integrated to run with our FHS-compliant structure. But with that we are in need also to remove the following packages for the moment:

android-sdk-platform-tools
scrcpy

The reasoning behind is that distribution of pre-compiled binaries is not our major goal and way to go. So for sure we will look out to compile android-tools from source for the future or find possibilities to do. But for now we cannot longer provide those packages. Also a reasoning WHY we are not providing Google Go: The language is downloading further dependencies while compilation. That is not supported and complete the opposite towards a free and libre system. All dependencies have to be transparent and human readable code before. We can't and won't support different ways, not being compatible with our social contract.

We also don't support corporate open-source and projects making use of that as our basic interest is based on software done from the community for the community. No company is doing that kind without commercial interests, so we also don't want include more than needed.

94

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We need to remove the package acme.sh as it is no longer following our packaging-guideline: The reasoning behind is that there is no possibility to circumvent a registration on "ZeroSSL" as the maintainers made that mandatory. We don't support as mentioned corporate open-source and also we don't want users being dependening onto one singular "service". For that reasoning this package won't be any longer part of Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre and beyond.

I noticed, something on their git page as well...

Not sure if this is anything of interest, but:

I noticed LetsEncrypt looks like the link isnt there, almost as if they might be about to disable it.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

acme.sh was the other way a replacement for certbot as it is marked to be slight easier to handle in general. Nevertheless: certbot is straight while acme.sh included too much other parts and therefore had to go. We won't support "corporate open-source" with helping projects to enforce creating accounts elsewhere.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

On desktops, could GNUStep+WindowMaker be packaged for Hyperbola? If so, it could be a great alterntive to KDE and Gnome. Or maybe the window manager module from NextSpace: https://github.com/trunkmaster/nextspace

Just the window manager, as the rest of the software depends on DBUS/SystemD.

100

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Perhaps you can provide a PKGBUILD for the start of implementation? When possible to generic compile the windowmanager without packaging, it can be also possible. No final promise about as we had also packages in the past looking first safe to work, but within chroot-environments failed to build.
