Thanks for the feedback: mpop is already packaged local and will be today coming with the next commit. Will post then a bigger amount of new ones for everyone having fun and helpful tools. smile

We are coming back towards packaging as to be seen: https://www.hyperbola.info/packages/?sort=-last_update
Our first builds from the official Hyperbuilder are coming to the repositories.

Congratulations for everyone working there and big effort from Coadde making this also possible. smile

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We have finished now most parts of our packaging-backlog and have also started fresh with new additions. Besides the packages zstd and hypervideo are no longer part of Hyperbola.

To name the reasoning here:

zstd

  • only worked within the spheres of the company "Meta" (former Facebook), which let alone has enough reasons not to be trustworthy

  • no real community-oriented inclusion so there is no guarantee we will be getting a further dependency without option to rebuild packages without

As conclusion we have removed zstd and also don't plan to integrate it back in the future. When a package cannot be build without it, we have the same reasoning as for others before not supporting it. All packages having a direct and foremost indirect dependency towards zstd were rebuild.

hypervideo

  • as a fork from yt-dl and yt-dlp it has the same advantages and disadvantages also within supporting non-free platforms downloading data from

  • exclusive work would be further needed to update this fork and keep it on pair with upstream projects, exclusive more time needed for only this single application and therefore at minimum one person to look for that

  • depending on the country and the local laws the so-called streamripping can lead to legal issues

We have removed hypervideo and therefore rebuild packages including interfaces towards it.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Please be aware of upcoming cleaning after release 0.4.3: https://www.hyperbola.info/news/hyperbo … tribution/
Especially [extra] will be cleaned from packages, we identify as not needed. In the future Hyperbola won't adapt a system-distribution but an operating-system. So there won't be further parts included from now on. For 0.4.3 we are working on the desktop-packages as stated, 0.4.4 is going only for a cleaning to prepare further base of HyperbolaBSD.

If you don't want to follow this path you can for sure always make an own mirror as Hyperbola is free and libre, staying also that way - but then as operating-system and base for others at will to distribute.

Will hyperports allow for re-compiling stuff with use flags, as in portage (gentoo)?

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

You can do that even today, look there into /etc/makepkg.conf.

Would be nice though to have a way to make hypervideo for the future. But if not, there might be other ways anyhow.

Besides, doesn't it depend where people streamrip? Aka, where you streamrip from as well as your location.

As for ztsd, irrelevant, do what you want... won't lose any sleep over not having it since you did say it was bloatware anyhow.

In any effect, its probably possible to build yt-dlp anyhow.

I don't think you need to remove the option from any audio packages to use that option.

If people want it badly enough, leave that up to them. Just don't provide the yt-dlp or hypervideo directly.

People will still probably get it if they want it badly enough. Besides that, its not a bloat package, then its not reasonable to do anything much else.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

There won't be any chance for such things like "streamripping"-software now or in the future. Nevertheless all parts are there if people have interest. But to list again one last time the reasoning:

- streamripping is per definition not a problem, but is seen as such from the point of copyright-holders (and therefore also possible problems with laws coming in different countries)
- the software named "hypervideo" had no stable release for over one year and we cannot do maintaining for that as  we have a complete different focus
- addng yt-dlp and / or youtube-dl is not possible for their usage of non-free javascript to circumvent different issues with the differnt portals in support
- there might not much dependencies but the software / project is nevertheless too big to be called "lightweight" there are around 1035 different supported extractor-definitions (https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/tree/m … /extractor)

To summarize: The project hypervideo is not possible to be added again and to have a stable system is for us right more important than more packages. We also don't support webservices within our packages right of the reasoning to protect the system itself and its users. It is the individual decision if it is neverthless going in the direction to implement streamripping-software. We won't and don't do that! smile

Besides to note: Alone out of some extractor-classes within yt-dlp we would need to modify that package. The amount of work to maintain only this single package is so much, that we cannot provide any support for this. So the final decision is to remove those packages or comparable ones. It does not make any sense as we on the one hand want to provide a free and libre system but on the other hand would have to accept packages implementing complete non-free and more problematic platforms.

On ripping media, mplayer/mpv/ogg123/sox and friends can do it with ease, except for tags and splitting like streamripper. But them you have tools like mp3split.

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

We will remove midori next to come. Reasoning behind is that there are many troublesome developments around that browser. First to name a further meant project based on Electron (https://gitlab.com/midori-web/midori-desktop) which seem to have been removed for now. Than another one planned as fork from "falkon" but with using qt-webengine (therefore non-free). Ours based on top of gtk and webkitgtk is no longer maintained (https://github.com/midori-browser/core).

As replacement we have for sure badwolf already in our repositories.

Yes, sure to understand that this is a bitter pill we have here. But those projects like youtube-dl or yt-dlp have further grown over time and reached now a point, where they to be seen more than only a little utility. hmm

Re: [Hyperbola] Going the way and packaging, the roadmap after 0.4

Two out of the four of the components of the package fbida (fbi and fbgs) use the framebuffer of the kernel Linux for their functionality, so I'm not sure if this package will work once HyperBK comes along.

During compilation, a separate binary for each of the four components is built, so perhaps it would be possible to only ship the components that do NOT depend on the kernel Linux. However, I'm not sure if this is worth the time and effort of repackaging fbida, so it may be a better idea to just entirely remove fbida for the moment.

The following packages will be removed:

bleachbit
bleachbit-gtk
fbida

Also in work is the removal of the following two package:

adobe-source-code-pro-fonts
adobe-source-sans-pro-fonts

A rework is planned for the window-manager dwm as we won't provide further both packages dwm-bin and dwm-src.
