Topic: News about Hyperbola-development

Hello together,

there are news about the concurrent and further development for Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre and of course HyperbolaBSD. But first to mention the difference again:

  • Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre is a distribution around the Linux-libre kernel, built on top of the FSDG as we all know

  • HyperbolaBSD is a complete operating-system, a libre and free kernel included and a userland built around

To help the team more people will come aboard and if you enter the IRC-channel of Hyperbola tomorrow you'll see interested participants with discussions about the project, the upcoming points and plans. Also having more into the theories for free, libre software and culture itself. I know everyone is curious about the plans and what to come. Hello folks here at the forums, we have some more information about the concurrent development for HyperbolaBSD and of course also Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre coming up with version 0.4.

Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre

Version 0.4 will also include more additions:

  • Inclusion of sndio as sound-framework

  • Refresh for xenocara as X-server

Please feel free and take a look onto the concurrent state of our list of packages, which is growing.
But all of this can be right away even more interesting: The invitation is all-time for everyone here interested to come into the IRC, speak with the team and make proposals. This project is part for everyone!

Essential about this point is to get the impression about the difference approaches when creating a package to be installed and this is also needed for helping to create packages.

Today it is planned to speak more about the upcoming release of Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre 0.4. Therefore also the on the spreadsheet with packages from the community noted (ATTENTION: JavaScript needed for viewing and generic access). Also the planning for the default desktop-environment: Please step forward and take action discussing with us in the IRC for helping.

Today we're talking first about pointers in C. Here you can find the concurrent information about that part. Furthermore: The examples to follow here. And just for the next part to talk about more data-structures like a stack, the example to be find here.

Pointers are not easy to understand and I have recognized again: There is no real easy way to explain them. Also we have another example within the thread for the keyword void, to look here.

First development is done for Lumina (big thanks to sagaracharya here: https://git.hyperbola.info:50100/~~saga … extra.git/) and building packages incoming for qemu and grub as soon as possible. For next week there has to also a talk about the filesystem and permissions to be reviewed within.

Now the first window-managers are available: i3-wm, jwm and icewm.
The first complete desktop-environment is ready for testing: lumina.

Just check the actual list of packages for being included into Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre 0.4. There are changes about the progress and especially the package gtkgreet cannot be included further as it depends on PAM and needs Rust / Cargo for compilation as it is only possible to run with the display-manager greetd (https://git.sr.ht/~kennylevinsen/greetd).

Hey you all, it has been a longer time this thread was not really more active. So this is changing for today: Work is done for HyperbolaBSD in the background most the time as rebranding is needed in the first place. Everyone being interested here: You are for sure invited to help and support. Nevertheless we also go further for our version 0.4. There will be a merge coming from testing to stable, so you will get all the added new and optimized packages and removals.

After that the next to come is version 0.4.1 and we will work on exactly two parts being stable: runit and hyperinstaller
Also here the invitation: Everyone interested in testing or further fixing, just contact us throughout for example tox. There are already tests going for now, thanks to the_hype.

Good to know, btw...

You may be interested in a psrticular audacity fork:

https://github.com/saucedacity/saucedacity

it is one of the few that has life still in it that actually isn't infected and/or dead.

In the case of most forks, dead is more accurate tho...

Except a certain one, which I don't need to name...

You can wait for it to be stable, wait till HyperbolaBSD is stable, 0.4.1, or just not bother till other informations is made available, etc...

There are some decisions of that project: I would name them not that good. First updating wxWidget-version too fast for us. That's just our problem. But then again going for Qt? Here to quote:

Yes, up to the team to decide. But up to all of us to decide here to integrate even more Qt-packages. From my concurrent point and knowledge: That  is a NO. Qt has proven in a whole that they don't respect "free software" and only the foul compromise of "open-source". So I would be pragmatic for Qt5, but not for any newer version and release. wink

Well, if qt6 really does require gtk to use, I would definitely agree... and if qt5 cannot be continued tp ne maintained without a massive amount of help as well.

Due to bloat being so irritating, etc...
