Re: How do you feel about the «more ardent radicalization» of the project?

Hello, first I noted your posting and was a bit unsure how to handle as I'm not a native reader and speaker of the chosen language. After using a translator possible - and I hope this was so far fitting translated - I think I can answer the questions.

But also: Welcome to the forums. Before now answering, can you imagine to write next in English so far? It is a bit better for all attending people here, so everyone can follow our conversation. smile
I did a bit of a quirky work getting a translator running local and offline - in that case the choice was drawn to a temporary executed installation within a VM including OpenJDK to run the application. As said: I hope the translation was accurate enough.

So onwards for your questions: Did we think about giving Hyperbola even a more radicale direction? That depends on who you directly ask, so the answer is in betwee YES and NO. Let me getting here more concrete: It is a bit complicated for example to exclude Github-hosted projects or exclude Gmail-based services. See there the problem is: We would punish people either not knowing better solution(s) for a time being current or simple said not having any other chance as to follow and host their minimal setup over these directions. Yes, the thoughts were there and are nevertheless part within all our doings. But we would clearly punish people not deserving that, besides in general it is quite complicated to overlook if anyone deserves something like that (punishment) in our regions and more a talk and debate is needed how the free software community wants to be seen within months, a year, five years and on-going on that time-schedule. Do "we" want to be seen just as running behind the centralized offerings? Or do we want to reorganize? Places like Sourceforge were there before Github and they were not really better, perhaps a bit different but in the end outcome there were and are also enough conflicts with Sourceforge (just as an example).

For HyperbolaBSD there was and is also the thought only clearly offeirng the basics, let's say really the kernel, the system-utils and userspace-utils and nothing clearly more. Then again we rethink and are back again at a small operating-system, offline but clearly offering the basics for a bit more. smile

But this brings the last part of your posting: No, it is not strange for modifying the system and even removing the package-manager is within that sphere. Bringing this up: Would you mind sharing more insights into your personal modifications? What did you remove aside pacman / hyperman (upcoming)? And how do you install software? Via "make install"? in that case updates are a bit different for sure and also getting older files no longer essential part of the software maybe an issue later on within the system no longer needed. So sharing your points is interesting and I hope you feel motivated to share more.

Re: How do you feel about the «more ardent radicalization» of the project?

Hello again!

No, I know about SourceForce. Mentioning Github, I just generalized his likes.
Speaking of «Gmail-based services», the official Hyperbola repository, for example, has a Coccinella package (XMMP/Jabber client), this program has a function organized on Gmail. This, according to my proposal, should be excluded.
I didn't quite understand what punishments we were talking about (probably the problem of the translator), but we will assume that you did not agree. In that case, how do you feel about the second example?
If Hyperbola repositories consisted only of the base system, which was also updated with LTS support? That is, the first installation process would remain the same, and users would perform «cosmetic actions» themselves, installing the software directly from the source code (yes, like «make install»). Probably, there will still be some conflicts with the basic system software supplied in the repositories and personally installed by users, but I don't think this is a big problem. The chance of this will be exactly the same as to say that tomorrow an asteroid will arrive on the Earth. yikes
Users would independently install, at their discretion, the software that they need, and which they most of all, they personally consider Libre. This would contribute to the more outlined decentralization of Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre.
You would not have to update packages in official repositories every time according to their stability; users would decide what they liked best. In this case, you could concentrate on more, in your opinion, important things. wink

Re: How do you feel about the «more ardent radicalization» of the project?

We have removed many, many packages - mentioning Coccinella. It is not any longer in testing as already discovered the problems. But that was so far part of my point: Some projects perhaps want to understand the points and add options or patches removing non-free services. In general we do no longer rely on online-applications per default and have reworked all applications and libraries consistent so far they only act on demand and otherwise not.

About decentralization: This is surely an idea as we have several places where people can add their own written packaging-scripts. Nevertheless is decentralization not always the perfect way and the middle perspective can be helpful. Therefore Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre offers basic package-set with core and extra while the rest stays out for options on users.
